10 Great Non Toxic Kettles To Try

You might think your cup of tea or coffee is good for you. But that’s true only if you’re using non toxic kettles to make your drink! Here’s why buying a non toxic kettle matters

By Chere Di Boscio

Did you know that when you make a cuppa, you may be ingesting loads of microplastics? Not only because your tea bag may be made of nylon (those pyramid shaped ones are the worst!). But also because your kettle could contain plastic and other harmful things.

Aluminium, plastic and Teflon, for example, often form the linings of kettles. Or may even form the whole of the kettle! These can leach into the water when we boil it.

Thankfully, if you are in the market for a new tea kettle, you do not have to buy one of those toxic ones. There are many models you can choose from that are super safe.

What Makes A Kettle Non Toxic?

In short, a non-toxic tea kettle is one made with safe materials that contain no harmful materials that leach into water when heated.

You should always avoid models made from plastic. But even those with plastic parts directly exposed to boiling water are toxic. When heated, this plastic will expose you to endocrine-disrupting chemicals into your beverages. And that’s whether it’s BPA-free or not.

Other toxic materials that comprise kettles include:

  • aluminum
  • copper
  • coloured ceramics
  • enamel glazes

These can leach heavy metals, such as cadmium, aluminium and lead, when heated at high temperatures.

So, What Makes For A Safe Kettle?

Stainless steel or glass kettles are probably the safest kinds. Both are resistant to high temperatures, and their materials are non toxic.

That being said, if you go for a stainless steel one, be sure to avoid 201-grade stainless steel. Over time, this could rust. Those made with 18/8, 18/10, 304, or 316 food-grade stainless steel are safest.

Of course, glass kettles are always free of heavy metals and other toxic substances like PTFEs, PFOAs, and PFAs.
