The Biodynamic Architecture Of The Aarunya Nature Resort

By visiting Aarunya Nature Resort, you can experience a unique blend of tranquility and natural beauty

By Diane Small

Tucked away in Sri Lanka’s misty hills, Aarunya Nature Resort offers more than just breathtaking views—it’s a living example of green design in action.

The resort has been crafted with biodynamic architecture, where buildings are shaped to follow the natural contours of the land, minimizing disruption to the ecosystem. Locally sourced materials, passive cooling, and careful orientation allow the villas to work with sunlight, wind, and water rather than against them, creating spaces that are both comfortable and environmentally mindful.

Surrounded by spice gardens, forest canopies, and birdsong, guests experience not only tranquility and natural beauty, but also the reassurance that their stay is in harmony with the earth itself.

Here below, we asked the team at Aarunya about how they merged sustainable design with a luxury retreat.

Aarunya Nature Resort

1. The UNESCO-listed Knuckles Mountain Range is a very sensitive area, ecologically speaking. How did you ensure there’s no harm to wildlife?

While the Aarunya Nature Resort is not within the UNESCO-listed Knuckles Mountain Range itself, we are blessed with panoramic views of this magnificent natural wonder and share a deep responsibility to protect the broader ecosystem we inhabit.

Our 10-acre estate preserves the existing topography, flora, and water flows. We worked closely with local environmental experts to ensure minimal disruption to native biodiversity. We only do our guided nature tours on designated trails with licensed naturalists. This ensures zero impact on wildlife and plant life. Each tour is intimate, with a maximum of two guests, to foster a deeper connection with nature. This also minimizes our ecological footprint.

We care deeply about ecological restoration and sustainable land management practices. Our initiatives focus on reforestation, biodiversity conservation, and habitat enrichment. These efforts support the flourishing of native fauna. Strategic planting—including tea intercropped with vanilla and pepper—creates layered ecosystems. This benefits both flora and fauna.

Our soil and moisture conservation efforts include the use of biodynamic fertilizers. We enhance soil microbes and carbon levels, and promote nitrogen fixation through natural leaf litter and fodder crops. This ensures a thriving, resilient landscape for generations to come.

2. Aren’t you worried that now that there’s one hotel there, more will follow, slowly destroying the mountain?

We share this concern wholeheartedly. Aarunya was not created as a catalyst for overdevelopment but as a mindful counterpoint to it—a model for how luxury hospitality can harmonise with the natural world rather than exploit it.

We understand that developments within ecologically sensitive zones are strictly regulated and monitored by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and other local bodies.

The Aarunya Nature Resort is located outside the protected boundaries of the Knuckles Conservation Forest. Through transparency, community collaboration, and sustainable planning, we aim to demonstrate that boutique, eco-conscious properties can exist in symbiosis with the environment. Our goal is preserving, rather than degrading, what makes these landscapes sacred.

Since opening our doors in 2018, no other hotels have arisen in the immediate vicinity. In fact, the area is not considered a typical tourist destination, and we’ve had to overcome significant challenges to sustain operations—especially in terms of water access, which we address through our own water wells and treatment systems, and an irregular electricity supply due to inadequate support for tourism at the local government level.

3. How did sacred geometry play a role in the construction of the Aarunya Nature Resort?

The architectural philosophy behind Aarunya is rooted in ancient principles of balance and harmony. Sacred geometry played a subtle yet powerful role in the layout of the villas and shared spaces. It guided spatial planning to foster tranquility, energy flow, and a deeper connection. This enhances the bond between guests and the surrounding nature.

Circular forms, axial alignments, and proportional ratios were used. These enhance spiritual resonance and coherence within the landscape. Our design aims to evoke serenity and introspection. We allow guests to feel not just in nature but of it.

4. How do you mitigate the damage done by light pollution at the resort?

Our remote hillside location already provides a natural buffer from urban light pollution. We’ve embraced this darkness as a feature, not a flaw—giving guests the rare opportunity to experience starry skies and the soothing sounds of the night in their purest form.

Throughout the Aarunya Nature Resort, we use warm, low-intensity, downcast lighting that is carefully positioned to avoid disrupting local wildlife or the natural rhythm of the landscape. Motion-sensor lights in select areas reduce unnecessary energy use, and all villas have blackout curtains to prevent internal light spill.

In addition, guests are personally attended to by trained butlers and guided by a resident naturalist and at times our sustainability consultants, ensuring all activities and explorations are conducted with the utmost respect for environmental sensitivity and sustainability. This allows us to offer enriching nature-based experiences while preserving the nocturnal integrity of the estate.

5. What do you do with water waste?

We treat all wastewater at the Aarunya Nature Resort on-site using engineered soakage pits that allow for natural filtration and sustainable groundwater recharge. We developed these systems in consultation with hydrological experts to ensure safe and responsible water management.

Both black and grey water undergo natural filtration through this closed-loop system, which ensures that no effluent is discharged into public drains or nearby water sources. This approach not only safeguards local ecosystems but also aligns with our broader commitment to environmental responsibility and self-sufficiency.

6. The hotel is a ‘fully biodynamic luxury retreat’. What do you mean by this?

We aspire to become Sri Lanka’s first fully biodynamic luxury retreat. This commitment goes beyond organic—it reflects a holistic worldview where we treat the estate as a living, self-sustaining organism.

Biodynamic agriculture builds upon organic principles while placing deeper emphasis on soil vitality, ecological harmony, and cosmic rhythms such as lunar cycles. It incorporates preparations made from natural materials to support plant health and ecosystem balance.

Under the guidance of certified biodynamic consultants, we are cultivating a resilient, regenerative ecosystem. Composting, seasonal planting, biodiversity conservation, and the elimination of chemical fertilisers or pesticides are central to our approach. We use ingredients grown on-site for our wellness treatments and culinary experiences, closing the loop between land, nourishment, and healing.

This regenerative model is foundational to our vision at the Aarunya Nature Resort. Not only to minimize our environmental footprint, but to actively heal and enrich the land for future generations.
