Meet Allie Nasr And Her Whimsigoth Interior Style

Allie Nasr is known as a master of whimsigoth style. But what exactly is that? And how do you get it? We asked Allie herself for answers

By Chere Di Boscio

Allie Nasr is a 32-year-old content creator and music teacher. But what she’s most known for these days is probably her ‘whimsigoth’ interior decor style.

Wondering what that means, exactly? According to interior brand Ruggable,

“Coined by architectural designer Evan Collins, ‘whimsigoth’ is an aesthetic rooted in the late 1980s to mid-1990s. It draws inspiration from cultural icons like Lisa Bonet as well as films and TV shows such as Practical Magic and Charmed. Think dark colours paired with whimsical elements like greenery, moody wallpapers and celestial motifs, bringing a moody yet playful atmosphere to any space.

We just love the look of her house. It’s so bang on trend – reflecting Dark Academia, Cottagecore and Goth styles – yet also so incredibly personal, too.

Here, Allie tells us via email and Instagram a bit about how she’s achieved this style over the past nine years. And how you can get whimsigoth style, too!

How To Get Whimsigoth Style – By Allie Nasr

EH: I love the lighting in your house. How did you get it so right?

Allie Nasr: I am a big “never use the big light” person. I love to be surrounded by soft lighting so lamps are always my solution. There is nothing cosier than reading by soft lamplight.

EH: Which object would you dash to save from a fire?

Allie Nasr: I’d definitely be reaching for my pets first! After that, probably one of my heirloom art pieces. My husband and father are both firefighters so I am sure they are cringing reading this answer. Haha!

EH: With such maximalist style, plus a pet, what are your top tips for household cleaning?

Allie Nasr: To help mitigate dust, I keep a few swiffers around the house. I use them every day here and there. It helps to stay on top of things.

EH: What’s the best thing about your house? And the worst?

Allie Nasr: I love so much about our house — the stone floors, especially are my favourite. A stonemason once lived here and did a ton of custom stone work—the charm of that is what sold us on the house initially!

The worst part would probably be lack of storage. We do not have a closet in our small bedroom and that makes things tough.

EH: Where do you like to hang out most at home?

Allie Nasr: My favourite area of the house is the main bedroom – it’s such a little sanctuary. My partner and I’s room is full of my favourite landscape art, plants and our most beloved books. There is nothing better than sitting in the bedroom and watching a storm roll in while you’re reading, nice and cosy in bed.

EH: How did you get started decorating your place?

Allie Nasr: It really has been a process. When I first started diving deep into decor, the spaces I focused on the most were our bedroom and the living room – the places we lived in and experienced the most. The Allie Nasr Whimsigoth approach began here.

We started with hand-me-down furnishings from loved ones and slowly built on things from there. Thrift stores and antique shops have been my constant, steadfast companions when it comes to finding new furnishings for our home. Little projects here and there really add up, and one day, I looked around and realised that we were in a place where I felt really good about our home.

EH: How did you learn to decorate like that? Did you study design or something?

Allie Nasr: I didn’t receive formal training, but my family is full of design-oriented women. My mom, aunt, and grandma all have/had incredible interior design sense. I’ve been visiting antique stores and thrift shops with them for most of my life. Watching them bring their spaces to life was something I always loved to do. I started decorating seriously in my teens and my mom always gave me room to do whatever I wanted design-wise.

EH: How has your home changed over time??

Allie Nasr: We didn’t start with Whimsigoth. Our home is ever-evolving. It’s amazing to look back at when we first moved in and see how far we’ve come. It’s been a long journey of constant change and development— I truly have loved every minute of the process. When we first began, we had very little. We were just pumped to have a $25 couch and some chairs from estate sales. I still thrift almost everything we own, and filling our home with things we love that we find secondhand has been an absolute joy.

I’m excited to see where we’ll be in another 8 years.

EH: Walk us through the renovation process a bit. What kind of building work did you have done to get the vibe you wanted?

Allie Nasr: I have slowly been doing projects over the years, but our most recent and serious renovation was the kitchen. My dad is a jack of all trades and worked in construction as a side job for years during his time as a firefighter. He helped us so much with the renovation — from taking down a wall to rewiring the electrical outlets.

EH: How did you get your husband to agree on the decor of your home?

Allie Nasr: I am lucky — my husband knows that one of my forms of artistic expression is through decor. He really just lets me experiment and play around. When it comes to big decisions, I always involve him, but he often lets me take the wheel and make the design decisions. I’m grateful for that! Mat is so supportive.

EH: What inspires you to upgrade or redecorate your home?

Allie Nasr: I feel like there is a new iteration of my little writing desk space every few weeks. I’m constantly changing the decor in this cozy corner, and I think it’s because the energy shifts in here so often. For me, creative processes snowball (in the best way) and writing a song or editing a video will often come with a mini redecorating session.

EH: What do you like your home to smell like?

Allie Nasr: I gravitate toward natural, earthy scents. My favourite candles come from Hearth Witch Home Co. — I always have one of her candles burning!

EH: How does art fit into Whimsigoth style?

Ellie Nasr: Gallery walls are my favourite way to display art. I really, really love grouping pieces together and creating one large statement with a series of paintings that fit a colour scheme or theme. Overall, I just adore collecting art, and this is the easiest way to feature *everything* that I possibly can. Maximalist for life, friends.

EH: What kind of art is your favourite?

Ellie Nasr: I really, really love collecting portraits. There is something so beautiful about the capture of humanity through art in this medium. I always joke that I’m adopting these people when I find them out at thrift shops or estate sales—who were they? What was their life like?

Now, they’ve found themselves in a little house in Arizona…

I do know some stories about a few of these paintings. The lady on the top left was a librarian in a small town in Arizona—her portrait hung in the library until it was scheduled for demolition a few years ago. The matching framed pieces were a husband and wife—their beloved friend in Mexico painted these portraits of them.

It’s nice to know little pieces of the people in these frames, but each person represents a life—a life that has long since ended based on the age of these portraits. I wonder about them all the time. I’m happy to keep their memory alive here.

EH: If your house were a season, what would it be?

Ellie Nasr: If this house were a season, it would be Fall. Autumn is my favourite time of year (for so many reasons) and I think the colour palette that I gravitate toward really reflects that.

Beyond the earthy, dark tones I love so dearly, the echoes of Autumn can be felt in the emotional pull of this place. The Fall can bring a comfortable melancholy — it’s a time for reflection and memory. Our home, filled with heirlooms and art, feels like an embodiment of that.

Cozy, moody, and whimsical — our little home really shines this time of year.

EH: What are your favourite houseplants that you use in your home?

Ellie Nasr: Pothos, snake plants, and ZZ plants are my favourites to keep around the house. They are hearty and do fairly well in low(ish) light.

EH: Tell us about three objects in your home that have interesting histories

Allie Nasr: (1) My 1900’s Wurlitzer piano has an amazing history — I got it off of Facebook marketplace a few years ago. The woman selling the piano told us that it belonged to her great uncle. Her uncle was a farmer, but moonlighted as a pianist in a ragtime band. He would load up the piano in the back of his truck and haul it to gigs. While he was playing, he would lay his cigarette down on the keys—you can see burn marks on the keys from where his cigarette would sit.

(2) I found a portrait of a woman at a flea market a few years ago — the painting immediately spoke to me. I loved the woman’s countenance and vibe. The piece just had this sweet energy about it. The man selling the portrait said that it once hung in a library in a small town in Arizona—his team was invited to salvage items before the building was demolished. The lovely woman depicted was one of the librarians.

(3) I recently picked up a daguerreotype portrait my local thrift store. The niece is circa 1850’s—American civil war time. The back says it’s a Wallis Brothers Daguerreotype, taken in their Chicago studio. There is a studio address listed, but the building is no longer in existence. I need to do more research! I’m so excited to dive deeper. I love antiques for this reason-so much history to uncover.

EH: What do you miss most about your house when you’re away?

Allie Nasr: I miss the comfort of our home the most. When you walk into the house, it’s literally like you can breathe a sigh of relief. The energy is calming and sweet.

EH: Any final words of advice for our readers about how they can decorate the way you do?

Allie Nasr: Surround yourself with things you love and you’ll never go wrong. This bedroom is full of antiques, heirlooms, and art pieces that make me happy. Plants, cozy bedding, and candles—they all help set the whimsical, witchy mood. I never want to leave.
